Oh Shit, Progress!

Some pictures of forward motion. more on the Flickr page, if you're inclined.

I learned how to weld when I took Metal Sculpture a couple years ago, and have been wanting to get back into it ever since. Turns out it takes a lot of equipment that isn't practical to own and keep in your average student apartment. Anyway, I'm back in the Metalshop, remembering how it goes, I'm picking it back up pretty quickly.

I've disassembled one iMac thus far, which is enough for right now, I'm making drawings for the frame I'll build for each of them and checking out welding supply stores for material. All 7 iMacs have now got OS 9.2.2 installed, which took a lot longer than I thought it would, with firmware updates and all. In other news, aluminum insulation tape is a good (enough) conductor of electricity to be the contact points for the floor sensors I'll be building next. Don't know what I'm talking about? You will, next update.

Is anyone else scared?

The term is going by so quickly. I don't know that anyone has made as much progress as we're supposed to have made. Pretty soon, we're all going to be part of an exhibition that is supposed to show that in the last five years we've become educated and great artists and shit, and that we deserve a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree for our efforts.

And then, we'll have to face the real world.

Explosion!

I found the official Apple service manual for the original iMacs online, I am most excited about the exploded view illustrations. I'm pumped to start tearing these things apart. Check the Flickr page for more photos.

iMacs!

Turns out that one of the iMacs I was going to get had some power supply issues. Whatever, seven displays was the random number I picked out of the air to begin with.

Also: it's come to my attention that while people have actually seen this blog, no one bothers to download the Proposal PDF that explains what the whole thing is about. So, instead, please have a look at my brand new Flickr page! The terrible low-res photos I keep posting are from my webcam, I should really get a digital still camera.

Holy Shit!

I just bought 8 iMacs for $25 a piece! There's another big resource hurdle of this project cleared.

Also, I had some breakthroughs about how to track users in the space, it involves lots of floor switches and mounting the camera on a servo. That probably doesn't mean much to you, so maybe I'll draw up some diagrams soon.

New Toy

Just this morning I received my brand new Parallax BASIC Stamp 2 with USB Board of Education, this will get the non-video inputs into the computer. I also recently got a new haircut, this will get me strange looks from old people on the street.

Sherrie Levine says

"...a lot of artists have made the last painting ever to be made. It's a no-man's land that a lot of us enjoy moving around in, and the thing is not to lose your sense of humor, because it's only art."

Like Ben said, "Listen y'all, Art History is important shit".

Also, progress on the work is forthcoming. I'm making some decisions that will help to shape the whole deal. As if anyone reads this anyway.
